Sugar Limiting sugar can be a challenge since it is hidden in so many foods we eat. Once you start looking for it you will be amazed how much you find it, even in some foods that don’t even taste sweet. Sugar, in moderation is fine, but too much can be both harmful to your teeth as well as your general health.

Here are just a few facts to get you thinking:

  • Some studies have shown that the average person consumes about 700g of sugar a week. That equates to 140 teaspoons!
  • A 12 ounce Coke has approximately 9 teaspoons of sugarcolas
  • Ketchup can be 23% sugar

When looking for it, there are lots of different names that all basically mean sugar. Sucrose, Glucose, Fructose, Maltose, Hydrolysed Starch, Corn Syrup, and even Honey. They are all sugars. We are not saying cut out all sugar in your diet, which is impossible. What we suggest is be more aware of you total intake and be sure to brush 30 minutes after meals.brushing

In addition to brushing your teeth, the American Dental Association recommends that you:

  • Floss daily
  • Eat a healthy diet and limit between-meal snacks
  • Replace your toothbrush every three to four months, or sooner if the bristles are frayed
  • Schedule regular dental checkups
